Having been forward deployed, I know the significance of having bases overseas, but some do us more harm than good.

Other than the ones in Iraq and Afganistan (which are needed for the wars), I'm not too sure of that... yes occasionally one of the morons on base will do something stupid (look at the rapes by the Marines in Japan), but for the most part I don't see them causing harm.

I could build a missile in my backyard that could hit Israel from Iran.

And a 1200 mile range would only hit Europe if you consider Bulgaria an important part of Europe.
