henry-need your input on audio

so listen man, it seems like we both have pretty damn good tastes in audio so i wanted to get your opinion on this setup. my ht is about 10 years old and the sound cuts in and out all the time so it's time for an upgrade-it's a sony system from when dolby digital first came out.

how does an onkyo 605+def tech procinema 600 sound? 14'9x15'0 listening room, open in the back to kitchen and dining room. 30% tv viewing, 30% movies, 20% ps3 games, 20% music. what're your thoughts on this setup? any better recommendations? trying to keep it to around $1k between receiver and speakers (online vendors are a-ok with me, as long as they're reputable). prefer speakers that look decent (doesn't have to be anything super tiny, but not humongous either). sound quality is the top priority. if you can think of something better, please recommend it, i'm open to suggestions. in pittsburgh, i don't really have the option to listen to a whole lot of speakers in my price range-no magnolias, so i'm stuck with the big box brands that usually are overpriced (imho) or boutique stores with snobby attitudes whose speakers are way over my budget. anyone else that wants to chime in, feel free. thanks man!

ive only heard onkyo's twice but they are def some good sounding speakers, but im probably not as familiar with them as you are so i cant comment much on them other than that. I looked them up http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=831063 <--- i found that thread informative. Im confused, does it not use upscaling or converting? they are saying it only deinterlaces to 420p?

I see its 90w but like the HK im sure its pretty decent to be able to produce very good sound from less wattage. The HK uses 80w i think compared to a yamaha using 100 at the same ohms

http://www.onkyousa.com/model.cfm?m=...class=Receiver

Aside from that I really like Harmon Kardon and Higher end Yamaha recievers. My dad has an old yamaha receiver and theatre system that makes me eyes shake.

Also, the harmon kardon recievers just really have a nice sound to me.
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1170289629684

Harman Kardon - 595W 7.1-Ch 95 watts total power: 85 watts x 7

this is the model i use to wow people with against the yamaha. some people think the HK is mediocre, others think its got really good tones. its really personnal chioce.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1201913281190

Yamaha - 910W 7.1-Ch. Digital Home Theater Receiver 910W total power; 665W RMS power: 95W x 7 @ 8 ohms, 0.06% THD

this is my fav yamaha receiver evaaaaaaar.

The onkyo is hands down cheaper for the wattage but like i said i cant compare it to the others without hearing it with the other two.

What speaker set up were you thinking on using? two floor speakers, a center channel speaker, a sub, and two rear bookshelf speakers?

as far as value goes, onky0 is your best bet, not the best but if you're a true audiophile but for a receiver that's moderately priced, you can't go wrong.

i'm curious about your speaker setup like henry mentioned...also, do yourself a favor and stay away from onkyo speakers. you're better off getting some KLipsch, JBLs, or vandersteens

haha onkyo speakers. yeah right. i may as well just get their htib then.

as far as the setup, the def tech procinema 600 is 4 matching satellites for fronts and surrounds and a dedicated cc-the speakers are small and piano gloss black. the sub isn't huge but has good, tight bass which i like.

here is the brochure for the pc600. it lists for 799.

dude tell me about it. closest one is near philly i believe. they seem like they'd be the perfect ht store for me-not too low end, not too high end.

another receiver that's caught my eye is the pioneer vsx-1018 due out in june. i think i might have to wait for that one. 1 more hdmi input than the onkyo, slightly more power to drive the speakers a bit better, thx certified. one thing i've heard is a problem for the onkyo is it makes a strange popping noise every so often when hooked up to a ps3 via hdmi which is how i'm going to have it, and for about a hundred bucks more, i'm thinkin i might wait for the 1018, just seems like a much better receiver overall. i'm sure it'll be better built than the onkyo as well.

oh, and it has FUCKING BLUE LIGHTS!!! sorry, i just really fucking love blue lights. also, the finish will better match all the other shit-panny 50pz85u, ps3, def tech pc600 speakers-all piano gloss black. sexy shit. henry, you're near philly correct? if so, i may have to take a road trip in june to listen to this beast if nobody around here has it.

is the 1018 still scheduled to arrive in june?

not sure how they compare to the klipsch or jbl satellites as i've yet to hear the def techs in person (like i said, not many good ht stores around so i kind of have to go off of reviews and opinions unfortunately). i think klipsch speakers sound a bit on the bright, harsh side to my ears, and the jbl's just don't have much openness or detail to them-in other words, they kind of sound like small speakers. from the professional opinions i've read (av sites, not consumer reports lol), the def techs have a wide open, detailed soundstage, can fill a room with sound, and have a very balanced, open high frequency range coupled with a midrange that is very neutrally balanced and sounds just like it should. what i like about this sat-sub combo is that with the passive radiators on the tops of all 5 speakers, it goes a tad lower in the frequency range than most sat/sub combos i've seen, so the sub doesn't need to go as high to cover the mid-bass hole in most small speaker systems. therefore, it won't be nearly as localizable as most subs in a sub/sat system. now i just need to find a place to listen to it. i've listened to other def techs and really liked the sound a lot, so i'm confident i'll like this one-i've listened to the old procinema 100, which is the equivalent i guess to the new procinema 1000. they have a very neutral, accurate, open, detailed sound which is what i like.

yeah pio has always had a reputation for well-built, high quality goods, and this was one of the things that influenced my decision. i've heard of some problems with the onkyo's such as units overheating, breaking down, and a persistant popping noise when you have audio going through hdmi. i've never heard of such issues with any pio receivers.

My dad killed my last Pioneer receiver (that I thought would never die) when he turned the volume up all the way by accident one day. I didn't know so I put a movie in and as soon as the first bit of sound came through the speaker I heard a pop and smelled something burning.

Dad won't be touching the a/v equipment anymore
