What brands of car audio do y'all recommend?

I'm looking for a head unit (maybe with DVD), so what are some brands to look for, and what should I stay away from?

Honestly, if you can get it at Best Buy, Circuit City or "Big Box" stores, stay away from it... there are still some good brands out there that havent sold out the the mass production machines that tend to cause lower quality and higher defect rate

For head units, I've always stuck with Clarion, Kenwood, Alpine and never had any problems.

Clarion used to be the shit, but they are just average now. Even though I am not a fan of Alpine, they are good for High End applications. Factory decks can also do a nice job if you are looking to do a nice system, just get a quality high to low converter and some good amps and you should be fine. I have a Bose head unit pushing Alphasonik amps with Orion subs and speakers and it sounds incredible.

i want something that will fill the double-stack opening in the dash, but i dont wanna spend the extra $$$ for a DVD head unit - i'll never watch movies in the car anyhow. plus, i want it to have the traditional controls/knobs/buttons, unlike the new DVD players with the big screens which are mostly touch screen or remote-only
