Battlefield: Bad Company
Shoot the buildings, and they turn into Swiss Cheese. That may not sound like a big deal, but in gameplay terms, it makes all the difference in the world. When buildings are invulnerable to damage, a game may still be fun, but it isn’t realistic. When they collapse into drab heaps of rubble, it’s the reverse. But this is more like a game of classic, old-school Worms. When you shoot out walls, the floors and roofs they were supporting just hang in the air. It’s a modern shooter with a hint of Road Runner, and we’re really starting to like it. We’re with Patrick Bach, producer of the single player component of Battlefield: Bad Company, and he’s showing us just what makes this new shooter so different. DICE has taken the combined experience of creating the multi-player Battlefield games, and pushed it into a new direction: a story-focused, single-player FPS on console. It’s not a rah-rah, patriotic, all-American action extravaganza, either. It’s on a personal scale, with a squad of under-achieving soldiers simply out to survive World War III, and make off with some gold bullion into the bargain. Most every cliché of the genre is dispensed with. You are not some lantern-jawed, steely-eyed wunderkind leading your men into battle. “It’s not a tactical shooter. You’re not the leader.” The other men in your team will vaguely follow you around, killing whoever they feel like, but they’re not taking your orders. “They’re on a very loose leash.” The only reason you’re walking out in front is because you’re at the bottom of the food chain. In infantry skirmishes, the person who sticks his head out first is the one most likely to get it shot off. Bad Company aren’t polite about it, either. “Since I’m the new guy, they’re bullying me around.” Rising over the crest of a hill, we start to get a feel for the scope of the game. Maps are over 1.5 kilometers square, and this particular one has over 30,000 trees for foliage. DICE’s proprietary Frostbite engine has been built from scratch for current-gen consoles, optimised for the latest effects, and free of excess baggage from the 90s that a lot of game engines still have cluttering their code. Frostbite is a lean beast, and super-smooth rendering of this vast, Eastern European environment is evidence enough. Our view from this ratty hill reveals a fortified Russian checkpoint – our objective. Rather than being ‘funneled’ forwards, things are a lot more open-ended. To demonstrate, Patrick whips out a little gadget that looks like one of those mobile phones they make for Third World markets. It’s something he lifted from the corpse of a Russian soldier earlier – it’s used for calling in mortar strikes. One simply points at the target, holds down fire for a few seconds, and waits for some Russian radio chatter to herald the destruction. It’s worth noting at this point that no two mortar strikes turn out the same. Each mortar round is a separate, actual projectile being modeled in the game world, not a mere animation. The yield is predictable, but the outcome is not. Exploding barrels are surreptitiously scattered around the map, too, and chain reactions are par for the course. Bazooka a first floor sniper’s position, and you might inadvertently fell a tree, in turn crushing an enemy machine gun nest. Once again, these factors make Bad Company feel a lot like old-school Worms – only in real time, and in 3D. Team 17 should be taking notes. Closing in, we cop some enemy fire, and it’s here that Patrick demonstrates how health kits work. As the screen tints red, he whips out a bright yellow syringe, triggering an animation that dramatically impales it in the player’s chest. It’s pretty full-on, and a departure from, say, the Master Chief just hanging out for a few seconds while his shield re-charges. Is this a regressive step in game design? No – It’s a deliberate one. “We try to stay away from auto-heal,” Patrick tells us, “because it pacifies the player.” There are no generic weapon crates, either. Instead, new ammo and weapons come from duffel bags, their contents a mystery to the player. You know you’ll get something useful, you just don’t know what. Call in a missile strike to destroy a tank, and you’ll get a little mini-game where you steer the smart bomb to its target – we couldn’t help but remember the Super Sheep. So many features in Bad Company are reminiscent of Worms; the only thing missing is the concrete donkey. It wouldn’t be out of place - a wry, dark sense of humour runs throughout the work – little hints of Full Metal Jacket and Apocalypse now, transplanted in to a near-future, three-way tussle between the US, Russia, and the ‘Middle Eastern Coalition.’ All your grenades have little smiley face tags on their ring pulls – for the enemy, a final insult. To recap, this is an unconventional squad-based shooter, with massively, practically destructible environments, emergent gameplay, unpredictable weapon drops, lavish graphics, realism tempered by fun, vehicles, air strikes, and a fresh take on FPS action that no-one else seems to be emulating. As for blasting through walls, you can count on one hand the other shooters looking to include this feature: Denied Ops, Fracture, and Red Faction III are the only quality titles that immediately come to mind. Perhaps the most important thing to consider is that the ability to destroy walls, concrete barriers, and chain link fences cuts both ways. “What you blow up, the enemy can use against you.” War in Battlefield: Bad Company is fluid. If you don’t keep your wits about you, you’ll be swept away with the tide. Patrick Bach summed it up quite eloquently: “Nothing is safe from destruction in this game.” That includes you. Battlefield: Bad Company will be available for Xbox 360 and PS3, and will go on sale next year. http://www.gameplayer.com.au/Home/PR...e789&v7Pager=2

i think the shooting buildings that would STAY damaged throughout the rest of the map/level whatever would be a cool idea i hope the damage dosent respawn.
sounds good for multiplayer too, say a sniper is in a building you can shoot the buildings and let the rubble kill him |
