Backup your GMail to your machine
Here's a good idea. If Gmail takes a shit, or you are locked out of your account because of something they did or someone tried logging into your account too many times, you're up the creek. You can use a POP client to download the messages but you would need to have a full client running all the time.
This approach uses Fetchmail to download your messages on a periodic basis, so you can configure it to pull things down before your nightly backups kick off on your machine. Fetchmail is a *nix utility, so if you're running a Linux box (possibly Mac, too) you can run it natively but if you're on a Windows box you'll need to install Cygwin.
