Laptop battery not charging

So, my computer runs fine off of the AC but it does not charge the battery even though it says its charging it. The charge light is on sometimes and then it turns off a little bit later yet the power options still say the battery is charging. The battery is new and working and I switched the power cords and nothing got better. I searched Google and found some people saying there are problems with the motherboard or the power supply board. Since the computer is about 3 years old I am not really looking to replace anything expensive. I was wondering if anyone thinks that getting a docking station might fix the charge problem since it does not charge through the power cord location.

question...
since you say the battery is new are you sure it's the right one? I know HP/Compaq latops and some DELL laptops are VERY picky about the batteries that go in them, to the point they're 'chipped' such that if the laptop doesn't see the chip it won't charge the battery.

What type of laptop? I know with the DELLs there is something on the battery itself that you can push and green lights will light up to show you if it's holding a charge. Here is what you can do:

1.) Take out battery and plug in laptop, turn it on.
- If this works with no issues then your battery is the problem.

I had to replace my DELL battery and found a wholesaler on eBay and got one for $27 shipped to my house.

I agree with how new is new? Batteries have a finite lifetime and from my experience in production environments it's about 1-1.5 years, with diminishing capacity in that last 6 mos.
If it's newer and you bought it from an authorized seller, check with your laptop manufacturer and see if they will warranty it. Sometimes you just get a bad one.
I would also pop into the BIOS setup and there is usually a battery status page. That page is the most reliable place to check the battery status. If it's dead, it will tell you.
Docking station won't help since it still uses the laptop charging circuit to charge the battery. It just gives it power though a different connector.

I am pretty sure its the right one. I have had the battery for about 6 months and I never noticed the problem before. The battery is meant for this computer but it is not an original Dell battery.

I have a Latitude D810. The computer works fine on and off of AC power but off AC the battery just slowly dies and it does not charge when its plugged in. Do you still have the name of the wholesaler?

Like I said earlier in this post, the battery is about 6 months old. How do I get into the BIOS set up and check the battery status page? I just used the status page under Control Panel->Power Options->Power Options.

When you reboot it, and the big blue Dell logo comes up, press F2.

It's on a page that says battery. I can't remember if you press ALT-P to change pages or not. There should be instructions at the bottom of the screen.

Hmmm...ok. Since it's not a Dell branded battery I don't know if any other options than to follow up with the person/company whom you purchased it from and see if there is a warranty.
