100% CPU Usage

My laptop is currently running 100% CPU usage while running AIM, Firefox, and installing Mcaffe updates. Due to Mcaffe constantly updating my compter runs like shit nearly everyday. I have 2gb of memory but it says my page file usage is 500-600mb, does that sound about right? I thought the paging file would be used a lot more to help the CPU out. Any tips on how to make shit run faster?

How old is your laptop?

Also have you run any kind of virus scan and/or spyware/malware removal tool?

Does it run slow all the time or just upon start up?

Get rid of McAffee, get one of the free anti virus programs that are better (Avast, AVG, Nod32).

Its just over 2 years old now. I have mcaffe virus scan but I have not gotten any new spyware stuff since my HD crashed. Got any links to some good free ones? My comp is lagging as we speak and it has been on for a few hours.

I get mine for free through school so I am not too worried about getting a different brand for now.

this also might be a hardware issue. have you modified any of the hardware since the crash?

Nope, just threw in the new HD and reinstalled windows.

Try either adaware or spybot search and destroy both are free downloads from Free Software Downloads and Reviews - Download.com

Also you could check out Malwarebytes.org

teh_sysadmin turned me onto that one and it's pretty solid.

If you know your computer and a are a little advanced donwload Hijack This. It's a program that actually scans the registry to see if anything could be hidden/corrupt/missing. It also outputs a log you can post in their forums for their nerds to dissect and tell you what you can or needs to be deleted.

your page file should be in the 3072- 4000MB range.
