Palm Treo Pro

I still believe Palm + WM = FAIL but this is a good looking phone nonetheless..

Well you can't say you didn't see this one coming -- between the leaked shots, more leaked shots, and those -- yes -- leaked press materials, this was only a matter of time. That's right: Palm has gone and gotten all official with its latest and greatest smartphone, the now-familiar Treo Pro. The new Windows Mobile device is being sold unlocked (!), and features an HSDPA cell radio (tri-band UMTS, quad-band GSM), GPS, 802.11b/g, a 320 x 320 touchscreen display, 256MB ROM, 128MB RAM, a 2-megapixel camera, support for microSDHC cards up to 32GB... and a standard 3.5mm headphone jack! No word on price or actual street date, but we can't imagine that's too far off. Hit the read link and take a tour of the new device, or watch the totally radical -- and long, and detailed -- video after the break.

Little more info.

Sunnyvale (CA) – The Handspring Treo is considered to have been the pioneer of the smartphone category and long before the iPhone, the Treo was the fanciest and most functional cellphone you could buy. The iPhone changed the smartphone landscape, but if you are among those who just don’t like an iPhone or Blackberry, the new Palm Treo Pro is certainly worth a look.

Palm recently struggled to find its direction. After ill-fated concepts such as the Foleo, the company seems to be on a promising path again with its Centro entry-level phone and today’s announcement of the Treo Pro.

Based on Windows Mobile 6.1, the Pro comes in a familiar Treo form factor that splits the front cover real estate between a physical keyboard and a color screen in half. It is without doubt the sleekest Treo Palm has come up with so far and, subjectively, will not look out of place next to an iPhone or the latest Blackberries. Running a 400 MHz Qualcomm processor, the device includes a 320x320 pixel display, 3G (HSDPA) support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and a microSDHC expansion slot.

The most significant downsides compared to the iPhone are the Pro’s memory and price. There are only 100 MB available as storage space, which means that you will have to purchase extra memory cards in addition to the $549 price (subsidized pricing should be $399.) But, other than the iPhone, the Pro is unlocked, enabling buyers to use the device on a GSM network of their choice.

In direct comparison, the Treo Pro is much less a multimedia phone than the iPhone, but has a much greater focus on business applications. Not surprisingly, Palm describes the Pro as effortlessly usable smartphone for businesses that want to simplify their IT infrastructures and lower costs, and for users who want to stay on top of their professional and personal lives.

At first look, the Pro appears to be one of the most compelling smartphones based on Windows Mobile in the market today and could become an interesting alternative to Blackberrys.

Trust me man, I'm right behind you on that lol. When I go to an electronics store, I have to be put on a leash or have someone hold my hand otherwise I'll just go nuts and buy everything.

And I agree with you Hoz. WM needs to go away lol.

The expectations were just set way too high. One of at&t's beta testers came into the store with it last week so I had the opportunity to check it out. Sadly there are more bad than good. 1st off, the size. The thing is so wide you HAVE to use two hands on it to really use it. The weight of it. While the curve has a nice light weight feel the Bold is just way too light. Almost feels cheap. The "chrome" around is really paint. NOTHING like the chrome trim around the iphone which I thought it would be. It's very dull. The keyboard is identical to the 8800 series. Just too close together & can be very annoying mistyping. They're still having 3G issues with it which sucks since I was intending on using it for tethering. All around I'm not impressed. Others may think otherwise.

Couple other stupid things I noticed too such as the back "faux leather" back which is actually plastic slides off way too easy. The interface & screen however is gorgeous. That I can't deny. And I'm sure pricing will be a factor. They're releasing today at Rogers Canada for $399 w/ a contract! Supposedly we're expecting a price range between $300-400 which will be complete fail if true.

Rogers is always insanely priced, even with the Iphone and the data plans.
