I am a camera noob too. Only have done some reading and mostly bugging Matt. I still need a lot of help and I think I take pretty okay pictures.

dont buy a kit, lenses are too fucking slow for what she wants to use it for. will never work. theres this thing called an F stop. it determines the fastest shutter speed you can used based on the amount of available light. something with an f-stop of 2.8 is needed, generally, unless its bright as fuck outside, to get good action shots. tell him to buy a fuckin body by itself, like i said earlier, and then buy a used lens thats fast enough for her to do what she wants. otherwise she will be disappointed.

are you going to buy the lenses for raven then? 200mm f2.8 or longer lenses aren't cheap glass you know.

and the kit lenses aren't terrible shit. outside running around with a f5.6 max aperture lens at ISO400 will still allow 1/250 or faster shutters and still a get another stop or 2 down on the lens.

keep in mind I have variations of everything being discussed...
50mm f2.0 (original manual lens to my K1000)
50mm f1.4 (original auto lens to my ZX-5n)
28-80 f3.5~4.7 Pentax auto kit lens
28-70mm f2.8 Tokina pro series auto lens
75-200mm f2.5~3.5 Sigma manual lens
400mm f5.6 Sigma manual lens
14mm f3.5 Sigma manual rectilinear lens
15mm f2.8 Sigma manual semi-fisheye lens

I keep the Pentax kit lens on the one ZX-5n body that the wife uses frequently, and the Tokina on the other ZX-5n body that I use all the time. Why? because the wife doesn't like the MASSIVE WEIGHT INCREASE the Tokina creates. (380g vs 719g) Anyone who tells you handholding 700g of lens plus whatever your body weighs for a while is easy is lying.
